The Department of Child and Adolescent Cancer focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers and solid tumours in childhood and adolescence.
Childhood cancers are frequently of rare types and require treatment which should take the growth process into account. This is why the majority of children treated at Gustave Roussy are managed within a framework of clinical research trials conducted by the French Society for Childhood Cancers (SFCE).
Research on paediatric cancer and teaching of childhood oncology are two major fields of activity for the Department. Within the framework set by the French Society for Childhood Cancers (SFCE), the Department carries out a substantial number of therapeutic trials in the following areas:
- Pharmacology, chemotherapy and new treatments (under Professor Gilles Vassal’s direction)
- Immunology of childhood tumours (under Dr Dominique Valteau-Couanet’s direction)
- Genetic predisposition to childhood tumours (under Dr Laurence Brugières’ direction)
- Long-term follow-up Clinic (under Dr B. Fresneau’s direction).
In the teaching field, the Department organises an annual «Paediatric Oncology Day» and teaching programmes for interns, as well as validating an Inter-University Diploma in Paediatric Oncology (DIUOP)
