Overview

The Anesthesia Department plays an important role in the comprehensive care of patients undergoing surgical or interventional procedures.

It is responsible for all anesthesia procedures performed at Gustave Roussy, for both adults and children, in both scheduled and emergency situations. These procedures range from outpatient surgery to major surgery, as well as interventional procedures such as gastrointestinal endoscopy and interventional radiology.

The anesthesia team is involved at every stage of the surgical or interventional process:

preoperatively, particularly during the preanesthetic consultation and in collaboration with prehabilitation and supportive care teams (nutrition, addiction treatment, etc.);
intraoperatively, to ensure safety and comfort during the procedure, by providing individualized care and continuously fostering the caregiver-patient relationship;
and in the postoperative period, with specialized management of acute pain and perioperative medical support for surgical departments.

Composed of anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists (IADE), and specialized paramedical staff, the team ensures safe, personalized care tailored to each patient’s needs, with the goal of reducing perioperative morbidity, improving patient comfort, and optimizing their care journey.

It also oversees the medical operations of the Surgical Continuous Monitoring Unit (USCC), performs central vascular access procedures for patients (implantable catheter ports, long-term venous catheters, PICC lines, etc.) and the management of the outpatient hospitalization unit.

Research

The anesthesia team at Gustave Roussy is actively engaged in clinical research. Its goal is to improve the quality and safety of anesthetic care in oncology, as well as the assessment and management of perioperative pain.

The team regularly participates in multicenter clinical trials. Research focuses in particular on:

The analysis and monitoring of the quality of care.
The prevention of postoperative complications and their impact on patient prognosis.
Optimizing perioperative analgesia techniques.
The evaluation of new drugs or medical devices related to anesthesia or perioperative medicine.

Several basic research projects, led by practitioners in the department, complement the clinical research.

Education

Education is an important part of the Anesthesia Department’s mission. Each year, the team supervises numerous residents in anesthesia and critical care, nurse anesthetists in training, as well as practitioners participating in continuing education or observational rotations.

The department provides continuing education for its staff through regular theoretical training sessions focused on the specific aspects of oncology anesthesia, as well as practical workshops and healthcare simulation sessions.

The team also participates in university and interuniversity certificate programs (DU, DIU), conferences, and masterclasses, particularly in the fields of regional anesthesia and analgesia, management of difficult airways, and the specific oncological aspects of anesthetic care.

The department’s physicians are an integral part of the teaching team for the University Diploma in Oncology Anesthesia offered by Gustave Roussy, a theoretical program covering both anesthetic and perioperative management of cancer surgeries for all organs.
