Missions and Objectives

Founded in 2005 and transformed into a research foundation recognized as a public-benefit organization in 2023, the Gustave Roussy Foundation has restructured its organization to create new momentum for the benefit of patients. It is fully committed to an ambitious strategy: supporting high-impact research and accelerating innovation in oncology within Gustave Roussy.

Its mission is to:

In 2024, the Foundation launched its program of chairs of excellence, created to attract the best international talent in oncology and enable them to establish their research teams at Gustave Roussy.

The Gustave Roussy Foundation is thus strengthening a unique ecosystem that brings together clinicians and researchers from Gustave Roussy and its institutional partners, Paris-Saclay University, the CNRS, and INSERM, in close collaboration with the innovative companies of the Paris-Saclay Cancer Cluster, the leading oncology biocluster.

The goal is to foster scientific discoveries and their transformation into the treatments of tomorrow for the benefit of patients living with cancer.

A framework agreement for collaboration between the Foundation and the Gustave Roussy Institute was adopted in 2026 to define the terms of joint initiatives aimed at accelerating cancer research.

Since 2009, the Gustave Roussy Institute and the Gustave Roussy Foundation have held the “Don en confiance” certification issued by the Charter Committee. This certification attests to the transparency of fundraising procedures and the sound management of donations.

Evaluation

Research programs funded by the Gustave Roussy Foundation are evaluated by an international Scientific Advisory Board.

Chairs of Excellence: Innovating to Heal

Our Chairs of Excellence program aims to attract the best talent in oncology. Funded by the generosity of our donors, it supports researchers selected by a jury that includes independent experts, based on a single criterion: scientific excellence.

These endowed chairs, which come with attractive salaries and “relocation packages” for a renewable five-year term, enable us to offer top-tier candidates working conditions that meet international standards.

To build on the momentum created in 2024 with the establishment of the first three chairs in immuno-oncology and nanotherapy, three new chairs in data science and immuno-oncology were created in 2026.

Research Programs

In 2024, the Foundation launched a series of programs to strengthen research at Gustave Roussy and promote discoveries in oncology for the benefit of patients:

Medical and Scientific Programs: Exploring New Applications in Oncology

In February 2025, the Foundation, in partnership with the Institute, launched a call for proposals for five-year medical-scientific programs. These ambitious, high-impact programs aim to accelerate the transfer of knowledge from research to innovation for the direct benefit of patients, while generating significant scientific advances. Four winning projects were selected.

Emerging Programs: Exploring New, Groundbreaking Approaches

In February 2024, the Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute, launched a call for proposals for emerging programs with a duration of two years. These innovative and ambitious programs, which represent scientific and/or technological breakthroughs, aim to explore and consolidate new avenues in oncology and to demonstrate proof of concept, thereby justifying the subsequent development of a broader program. Three winning projects were funded by the Foundation, and two were funded by the Institute. A new call for proposals is currently underway to renew these programs.

The Equipment Program: Ensuring a State-of-the-Art Technological Environment to Accelerate Research

The Foundation also funds a state-of-the-art equipment program designed to strengthen its technology platforms (link to platforms) and make all of Gustave Roussy’s research teams more competitive.

Pediatric Oncology Research: Testing New Treatment Approaches

Research in pediatric oncology has also received strong support from the Foundation with the launch in 2025 of two new medical-scientific programs in pediatric oncology funded by the Foundation. The first program, led by Florent Ginhoux and Claudia Pasqualini, is developing new pediatric tumor models to understand the spread of tumor cells and resistance to immunotherapies. The program led by Léa Guérrini-Rousseau, Brice Fresneau, and Jacques Grill focuses on the risks of second cancers in children after they have recovered. In 2025, the Foundation also continued to fund the Phase 3 Biomede 2.0 clinical trial for a new treatment against diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).

The Gustave Roussy Prize

Prix Gustave Roussy 2027

Established to mark the 150th anniversary of its founder’s birth and on the eve of the Institute’s 100th anniversary, the Gustave Roussy Prize is an exceptional annual award intended to honor a researcher whose scientific discoveries have a major impact on the care of cancer patients.

With a prize of 200,000 euros, it is supported by Pierre Fabre Laboratories as the award’s founding sponsor.

New Research Building

Bâtiment de recherche

The Foundation is also supporting the construction of a new research building that, starting in 2029, will house Gustave Roussy’s research teams—whether they take an experimental approach aimed at unraveling the biology of cancer or a theoretical approach in data science, in cancer epidemiology, or in the social sciences.

It will also house the technology platforms that bring together the state-of-the-art equipment necessary for their research and the research support services.

Since 2023, more than €8 million has been allocated to the construction of this building, which is essential for the development of Gustave Roussy’s research activities.

Governance

The Gustave Roussy Foundation, a recognized public-interest foundation, was established in 2005. Its new bylaws were adopted and approved by decree of the Ministry of the Interior in 2023, as were its internal regulations.

The Foundation’s strategic direction is guided by a Board of Directors composed of 15 members divided into four groups:

  • The Founder’s Group, the Gustave Roussy Institute, represented by two ex officio members—the Director General and the Director of Research;
  • The college of qualified individuals from civil society, recognized for their expertise, comprising four members;
  • The college of institutional partners, including representatives from Inserm, the CNRS, Paris-Saclay University, and the Val-de-Marne Departmental Council;
  • The college of the Foundation’s donors and patrons, comprising five members elected by the Patrons and Donors Committee.

Two government commissioners appointed by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Research and Higher Education participate in Board of Directors meetings without voting rights.

The Board of Directors is chaired by Mr. Sébastien Bazin.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors consists of 5 members elected from among the Board of Directors, including a chair and a treasurer.

The operational management of the Foundation is overseen by a Director appointed by the Board of Directors upon the recommendation of its Chair.

The Director of the Foundation is Ms. Anne Paoletti.
