Professor Antoine Italiano
Professor Antoine Italiano is a medical oncologist, university professor and hospital physician, and a specialist in early-stage drug development, precision medicine, and the management of sarcomas.
After receiving the award for the best doctoral thesis from the Nice Faculty of Medicine in 2005, he defended his doctoral dissertation in 2008, which focused on the molecular aspects of cell biology. He then completed his scientific training with a postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Cristina Antonescu’s laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
His work focuses primarily on the development of new therapeutic strategies, early-phase clinical trials, the identification of predictive biomarkers, and the management of rare tumors, particularly sarcomas. He also develops translational research programs focused on the mechanisms of sensitivity and resistance to immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and new classes of drugs.
After leading early-phase clinical trial activities and the Department of Medicine at the Bergonié Institute in Bordeaux, he has been working full-time at Gustave Roussy since January 2026. Within the Department of Therapeutic Innovation and Early-Phase Trials (DITEP), he leads the precision medicine program and serves as principal investigator for Phase I clinical trials. He is also a senior oncologist on the sarcoma team and coordinates the clinical research activities of the IHU PRISM.
Professor Italiano has coordinated or served as principal investigator for numerous national and international Phase I, II, and III clinical trials. He is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
As the author of more than 500 scientific publications, he has notably published as first or last author in *Nature Medicine*, *The Lancet*, *The Lancet Oncology*, the *Journal of Clinical Oncology*, *JAMA Oncology*, *Clinical Cancer Research*, and *Annals of Oncology*. He has also been recognized as a “Highly Cited Researcher” since 2023.
