Education for Children and Adolescents

At Gustave Roussy, children and adolescents are encouraged to continue their education, even during treatment.

Maintaining the Connection to Learning

Education plays a vital role in the development of children and adolescents. Through interaction with teachers and fellow students, it enables them to acquire knowledge and develop skills. School is also a place for socialization: students share classes, a classroom, and everyday experiences there.

During treatment, Gustave Roussy encourages patients receiving care in the pediatric and adolescent oncology department to continue their education. This continuity is ensured both within the hospital and outside it, thanks to the dedication of an educational team composed of teachers from the French National Education System and volunteers from the association L’École à l’hôpital, who are attentive to the students’ specific needs.

The Benefits of Schooling in the Hospital

  • Fosters social connections

  • Prevents academic delays and dropping out

  • Helps the child see himself or herself as a student and not just as a patient

  • Helps children visualize their future and builds their self-confidence

An Adapted Educational Program

While encouraged but not mandatory, schooling at Gustave Roussy is tailored first and foremost to each patient’s health condition. Students can take classes “à la carte,” with teachers who adjust the pace based on their fatigue and treatment schedules. With their families’ consent, students can maintain a connection with their original school to ensure continuity in their educational journey.

The Preschool and Elementary School in Gustave Roussy

Children enrolled in preschool or elementary school can attend their classes in two classrooms set up within the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology. They are taught there by teachers from the French Ministry of Education on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding Zone C school holidays). When patients’ health prevents them from leaving their rooms, classes can also be held at their bedside.

Middle School and High School

For middle and high school students, the organization L’École à l’hôpital offers classes taught by volunteer teachers. These free, one-on-one lessons are tailored to the academic level of middle and high school students who are hospitalized. They are taught in the students’ rooms on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Exams

Students have the opportunity to take their middle school graduation exams and high school graduation exams at Gustave Roussy. The organization L’École à l’hôpital is responsible for organizing the written and oral exams, as well as for submitting the exam papers to the academic authorities.

Courses for Students

The organization "L’École à l’hôpital" can also organize, upon request, certain courses for college students.

School in the Hospital

Founded in 1929 by Marie-Louise Imbert, a philosophy teacher, L’École à l’hôpital is an organization that provides free academic support to hospitalized students in the Île-de-France region aged 5 to 25. The nonprofit works within hospitals to help students continue their education and plan for the future.

Classes at Home

Children who are not hospitalized may be too tired to return to school, particularly due to chemotherapy treatments. In such cases, and with the families’ consent, hospital teachers can arrange for home-based instruction in coordination with the home educational support services (SAPAD) in the patients’ home counties.

An art workshop

At Gustave Roussy, an art teacher leads a specialized workshop. Her position is funded by nonprofit organizations. This space allows patients—particularly those who enjoy manual and creative activities—to continue pursuing artistic pursuits during their hospital stay.
