Hematology Committee
Director: Dr. Stéphane de Botton
Specialized Care for Blood Cancers
The Hematology Committee brings together the expertise needed to diagnose and treat malignant blood disorders—diseases that primarily affect the bone marrow, blood, or lymph nodes. Patients are referred to specialists in their specific condition to develop a treatment strategy tailored to the disease, its progression, and their individual circumstances.
Care is based on laboratory and radiological tests, conventional or protected hospitalization, outpatient treatments in a day hospital, as well as autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants when indicated. The committee’s physicians also contribute to clinical trials focused on hematologic cancers and cell therapies.
Cancers and Diseases Covered
- Myeloid Leukemias:
Acute and Chronic Forms - Lymphomas:
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas and Hodgkin lymphoma - Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
Essential thrombocythemia, Vaquez disease, myelofibrosis - Mastocytosis
Diseases associated with an abnormal accumulation of mast cells - Lymphoid leukemias
Acute and chronic forms - Multiple myeloma
Cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow - Myelodysplastic syndromes
Including chronic myelomonocytic leukemia
Specific Areas of Expertise
The department performs autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants. The protected areas allow the department to care for patients whose immune systems are severely compromised.
The oncology and hematology outpatient clinic treats patients when treatment, follow-up care, or certain procedures can be performed without the need for a full hospital stay.
The teams participate in clinical trials, including early-phase trials conducted in collaboration with the Department of Therapeutic Innovation and Early-Phase Trials, when circumstances permit.

Hematology Research
The department’s clinical research is overseen by Committee 110. This research evaluates new therapeutic strategies, whether through trials comparing a standard treatment to a new approach, early-phase trials, or studies based on biological samples collected with the patient’s consent.
Gustave Roussy also has several research teams affiliated with the onco-hematology research area:
- Biology of Childhood Leukemias, led by Thomas Mercher, within UMR 1170 Normal and Pathological Hematopoiesis.
- From Hematopoietic Stem Cells to Megakaryocytes, led by Isabelle Plo-Azevedo and Hana Raslova, within UMR 1287 “Hematopoietic Stem Cells and the Development of Myeloid Hematological Disorders.”
- Cell Biology of Organelle Networks, led by Kristine Schauer, within UMR 1279 Dynamics of Tumor Cells.
