Neurology Committee
Director: Dr. Sophie Bockel, radiation oncologist
Coordinated Care for Brain Tumors
The Neurology Committee brings together specialists involved in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors. Each case is discussed in a multidisciplinary setting to develop a treatment strategy tailored to the tumor type, location, grade, molecular characteristics, extent, and the patient’s condition.
As needed, the care pathway involves medical oncology, radiation oncology, neurology, imaging, cytogenetics, pathological pathology, and neurosurgery. Certain neurosurgical procedures are performed at partner institutions, in coordination with Gustave Roussy. The committee’s physicians also contribute to clinical trials focused on brain cancers.
Tumors Treated
- Gliomas
Tumors that develop from glial cells - Ependymomas
Tumors of the central nervous system - Cerebral lymphomas
Lymphomas affecting the central nervous system - Chordomas
Rare tumors that can develop at the base of the skull - Meningiomas
Tumors that develop from the meninges - Medulloblastomas
Tumors primarily seen in children and young adults - Brain metastases
Secondary brain lesions from another cancer - Other Tumors of the Skull Base
Conditions requiring multidisciplinary expertise
A strategy tailored to each tumor
The consequences and treatment options vary depending on the affected area: cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, brainstem, pituitary gland, or meninges.
The analysis identifies the type of cells that caused the tumor and its aggressiveness. Not all intracranial tumors are cancerous.
Cytogenetic and molecular analyses help clarify the diagnosis and can guide the treatment strategy.
Treatments and the Care Pathway
When possible and appropriate, surgery is often a major step in diagnosis and treatment. It may be supplemented by radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or other treatments, depending on the specific diagnosis. The treatment plan is developed collaboratively and then explained to the patient by the medical team.
Care for adolescents and young adults is organized in collaboration with the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology at Gustave Roussy, in order to tailor the treatment pathway to the age and specific needs of these patients.

Brain Tumor Research
Clinical care is closely linked to clinical research, particularly to evaluate new treatment strategies and improve the precision of radiation therapy. Dr. Sophie Bockel and Dr. Frédéric Dhermain are affiliated with Unit U1355 RAMO-IT, which focuses on molecular radiation therapy and therapeutic innovations.
For pediatric brain tumors, Gustave Roussy also has a research team dedicated to the genomics and oncogenesis of these tumors, particularly gliomas.
