An alternative to surgery

Interventional radiology is a diagnostic and therapeutic method known as “minimally invasive.” It allows access to a deep-seated tumor by using natural pathways (the urinary tract, digestive tract, etc.), the vascular system (arteries or veins), or by choosing a short, risk-free path through an organ (such as the liver).

These techniques are always guided by imaging (CT scan, ultrasound, endoscopy), which allows for in-depth visualization without having to “open” the tissues through conventional surgery. Interventional radiology makes it possible, for example, to administer high doses of medication directly into a tumor, to destroy tumor tissue by raising the local temperature, to place stents in narrowed or blocked vessels, and so on.

Interventional Radiology Services at Gustave Roussy

  • Thermal destruction of tumors using radiofrequency, microwaves, or cryotherapy
  • Chemoembolization: injection of chemotherapy and blocking of the blood supply to the tumor
  • Intratumoral immunotherapy
  • Gastrostomy: placement of a feeding tube into the stomach
  • Cementoplasty: injection of orthopedic cement into a weakened or painful bone
  • Percutaneous osteosynthesis
  • CT-guided biopsy
  • Placement of biliary, digestive, and urinary stents

State-of-the-art technical facilities

As the first cancer center to establish an interventional radiology department, Gustave Roussy now performs 4,000 procedures per year and boasts a state-of-the-art technical facility that is unique in Europe. It includes three dedicated rooms, including a hybrid suite equipped with a system that combines 3D robotic angiography and a multidetector CT scanner with built-in artificial intelligence.
