Addiction Studies
A cancer diagnosis can be an opportune time to take stock of one’s use of tobacco, alcohol, or other substances. At Gustave Roussy, the addiction treatment team supports patients who wish to reduce or stop their use in order to improve their quality of life, their health, and the conditions under which their cancer is treated.

Why seek treatment for addiction?
Certain habits can affect treatment, recovery, and quality of life during illness. Tobacco, alcohol, and other psychoactive substances, in particular, can hinder healing, increase the risk of certain complications, or impair physical and psychological well-being.
The addiction treatment team offers personalized and compassionate support, tailored to each patient’s goals and pace.
Personalized support
The team helps each patient assess their consumption habits and their potential impact on their health and treatments.
Consultations provide an opportunity to discuss the challenges faced, desired goals, and solutions tailored to each situation.
Medical and nursing support is available to ensure safety and facilitate the cessation or reduction of substance use.
The beverages in question
- Tobacco
- Alcohol
- Cannabis
- Psychoactive medications
- Other substances that can lead to addiction
When should you seek medical advice?
In particular, the team works in partnership with the head and neck surgery teams to support patients who use tobacco and alcohol prior to surgery and to prevent complications related to withdrawal.
Consultations make it possible to anticipate difficulties, implement appropriate support measures, and limit the impact of substance use on care.
Support can continue in order to reinforce the changes that have been made and prevent relapses.
How does the treatment process work?
Consultations can be conducted off-site or directly at the bedside of hospitalized patients. Support is based on a step-by-step approach that respects each individual’s journey and is coordinated with the other professionals involved in their care.
