Medical Transport Prescription
Medical transport orders must be issued in advance and justified by your medical condition
Health Insurance no longer covers medical transportation orders issued on the same day as a doctor’s appointment or a hospital visit. This does not apply to unscheduled visits or emergency situations.
- A medical transportation prescription must be issued by your primary care physician for your first visit to Gustave Roussy
- For patients already under our care, if your medical condition warrants it, the transportation voucher will be issued during your next appointment. If the transportation voucher is issued on the same day, only the return trip will be reimbursed.
- Having a transportation voucher issued will allow your health insurance to cover the costs.
- As a reminder, the medical prescription must be justified by your medical condition.
It is up to your referring physician at Gustave Roussy to prescribe the mode of transportation appropriate for your medical situation:
- personal transportation (car, public transportation, etc.);
- contracted taxi;
- light medical vehicle (VSL);
- ambulance.
Transportation by “stretcher” ambulance is reserved exclusively for patients whose medical condition warrants it.
- It is your responsibility to contact the appropriate service provider to arrange your transportation.
- The new rules allow for shared transportation, meaning that a licensed taxi or a light medical vehicle (VSL) may transport multiple patients at the same time.
- For serial transport (at least four one-way trips of more than 50 km within two months for the same treatment) or trips exceeding 150 km one way, request prior approval from your referring doctor’s medical assistant and submit it to your health insurance provider before your trip. The approval letter you receive from the provider must be provided to your ambulance company.

Simplified Reimbursement for Personal Transportation
With a medical prescription from your doctor, the Health Insurance program may reimburse the costs of using your personal vehicle and public transportation.
To simplify and speed up the reimbursement of personal transportation costs, the “Mes Remboursements Simplifiés” (MRS) platform is currently being rolled out across France’s local health insurance offices (CPAMs). This service allows you to submit claims for your personal vehicle and public transportation expenses electronically via a simplified form available online. If the information provided is accurate, you will be reimbursed within 7 days.
