Summary
Themes, Objectives, and Challenges
The overall objective of the Tumor Cell Dynamics (TCD) unit is to understand the cellular mechanisms that enable tumor cells to invade tissues and form metastases, the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. By viewing the cell as an integrated functional unit, the unit develops a multiscale approach, ranging from the molecular to the tissue level. Research focuses on the migratory plasticity of cancer cells, the reorganization of their intracellular logistics, and the role of the tumor microenvironment. The strong complementarity of the four teams makes it possible to address these questions using cutting-edge technologies (advanced imaging, genome editing, 3D models, organoids, and omics analyses). The research addresses both fundamental questions—elucidating the biological basis of invasion—and applied goals, aiming to identify new therapeutic targets that limit tumor spread.
Results, Prospects, and Scientific, Clinical, and Societal Impacts
The unit’s research has identified new migration strategies used by cancer cells, elucidated the role of endocytosis, cell polarity, and organelles in invasion, and provided a better understanding of the influence of the tumor microenvironment. These results have strengthened the unit’s international standing in the field of cancer cell biology. Future research will focus on developing more physiologically relevant models based on patient-derived organoids and on strengthening translational approaches through close collaborations with Gustave Roussy Hospital. Ultimately, this research aims to improve the prediction of metastatic risk and pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies, with a major impact on patient care and public health.
