Biography - Sophie Bockel
Dr. Sophie Bockel is a radiation oncologist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Gustave Roussy, where she treats patients with primary brain tumors and brain metastases. She has chaired the Institute’s Neuro-Oncology Committee since September 2026 and is a member of the EORTC Brain Tumor Group.
With a particular interest in neuroscience and neuroanatomy, she aims to better integrate the brain’s anatomical and functional organization into radiation therapy strategies. She conducts her research in close collaboration with the Inserm U1355 RAMO-IT unit and Paris-Saclay University. Her work focuses in particular on accounting for white matter tracts in stereotactic radiotherapy and on predicting glioblastoma relapse sites using multimodal MRI, specifically combining perfusion and diffusion imaging.
She is also interested in developing innovative therapeutic approaches and digital tools in neuro-oncology: CAR-T therapy for glioblastoma, focused ultrasound to modulate the blood-brain barrier, vagus nerve stimulation, and AI-based software to automate segmentation, track changes in tumor volume, and aid in relapse prediction. She is the principal investigator of the CAMPSIS study, which evaluates the opening of the blood-brain barrier using focused ultrasound.
She holds a Doctor of Medicine degree and a postgraduate diploma in oncology and radiation therapy, and has earned university diplomas in neuro-oncology and in the morphology and imaging of the central nervous system from the Sorbonne. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Paris-Saclay University.
