Gustave Roussy's Research
Gustave Roussy's research is entirely devoted to oncology.
Closely integrated into patient care, its goal is to make discoveries that improve diagnosis, treatment, and patient care, as well as cancer prevention and quality of life during and after cancer.
Multidisciplinary in nature, it spans the spectrum from cancer biology to data science and applied mathematics, including radiation physics, imaging, epidemiology, and the humanities and social sciences.
Research conducted at Gustave Roussy generally relies on an integrated approach combining multiscale analyses of patient samples with biological experimentation.
It is carried out in close collaboration between the Institute and the Gustave Roussy Foundation, and in partnership with Paris-Saclay University, Inserm, and the CNRS. It also receives support from Gustave Roussy Transfert for technology transfer.
With the opening of the Paris-Saclay Cancer Cluster—dedicated to healthcare companies—on campus, Gustave Roussy’s research is now at the heart of an innovation ecosystem in the field of oncology.
This unique organization—bringing together the hospital, research, commercialization, and industry—accelerates the transformation of discoveries into innovative products. These products are then tested in clinical trials at the hospital to ensure their safety and benefit for patients.
Gustave Roussy's research consists of:
- Exploratory and translational research, including joint research units that bring together research teams by scientific theme, and a joint service unit that brings together technology platforms;
- Clinical research, which is coordinated by the Clinical Research Department (DRC) and involves the clinical committees and the Clinical Investigation Center (CIC).
An Education and University Relations division oversees joint academic training activities with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris-Saclay and in collaboration with Gustave Roussy Education.
Research Support
The General Secretariat for Research supports the activities of the Gustave Roussy scientific community by providing various research support services: research monitoring and evaluation, scientific coordination and the Grant Office, contract and research budget management, human resources, information technology, logistics, and health and safety.
The General Secretariat for Research implements the decisions made by the Strategic Research Committee. It fosters relationships between research teams, Gustave Roussy’s management and administrative departments, and institutional partners.

Research Governance
The strategic and operational management of research at Gustave Roussy is jointly handled by the Institute’s Research Department and the Gustave Roussy Foundation’s Management Department, which work together to develop a five-year research roadmap.
This oversight is supported by three joint committees between the Institute and the Foundation: the Strategic Research Committee, which approves the main strategic directions and institutional research programs; the International Scientific Advisory Board, which provides medium- and long-term guidance to steer Gustave Roussy’s research strategy; and the Fundraising Committee, which recommends how donations and bequests should be allocated to support research initiatives while ensuring that donors’ wishes are respected.
The International Scientific Council
The International Scientific Advisory Board is an external advisory committee for Gustave Roussy. It brings together international experts from the world’s leading cancer research centers, who provide Gustave Roussy with their independent expertise to support the institute’s research strategy, excellence, and global reach.
The Scientific Advisory Board evaluates research programs, analyzes emerging issues, and makes recommendations aimed at strengthening Gustave Roussy’s scientific ambition, international appeal, and strategic collaborations.
Meeting twice a year, the Scientific Advisory Board is composed of members appointed for a four-year term, with members serving in staggered terms. This allows the Scientific Advisory Board to gain in-depth knowledge of Gustave Roussy and to provide long-term support for the evolution of its strategy and research programs.
