Clinical Trials and Research for Adolescents and Young Adults

Like adult patients, adolescents and young adults with cancer may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial.

What is a clinical trial?

Although current treatments allow for the cure of the majority of adolescents and young adults with cancer, certain subtypes of the disease remain associated with a poor prognosis. Furthermore, even after remission, some patients may continue to experience side effects—sometimes significant ones—related to the tumor itself or to the treatments they received.

In this context, clinical trials aim to improve the management of the most complex cases while reducing adverse effects. Conducted according to strict protocols, these clinical trials ensure the safety of participants while adhering to rigorous scientific and ethical standards.

Three Types of Clinical Trials for Adolescents and Young Adults

Depending on their age at the time of enrollment in the trial, adolescents and young adults may be eligible to participate in a clinical trial open to adults, children, or both.

Understanding Clinical Trials Through Video

Clinical Trials at Gustave Roussy

As a pioneer in the development of clinical trials, Gustave Roussy places particular emphasis on making new treatments accessible to all cancer patients who could benefit from them.

Doctors and teams from several departments at Gustave Roussy participate in clinical trials:

  • Pediatric oncologists from the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology

  • The team from the Specific Interdisciplinary Care Program for Adolescents and Young Adults (SPIAJA)

  • Clinical trial specialists from the Department of Therapeutic Innovation and Early-Phase Trials (DITEP)

These experts are working on multiple fronts to facilitate patients’ access to new treatments:

  • Local

  • National, with the French Society for Childhood and Adolescent Cancers and Leukemias (SFCE)

  • European, in partnership with the ITCC (Innovative Therapies for Children and Adolescents with Cancer) network and the ACCELERATE platform

Strategies Tailored to Each Situation

Different situations can lead to a clinical trial, each of which has a specific objective.

Experts from Gustave Roussy talk to us about clinical trials

  • Dr. Benjamin Verret, medical oncologist

“Joint consultations between medical oncologists and pediatricians can be conducted to provide the best possible care for the patient based on their age and personal circumstances. A significant achievement in this area is the ability to conduct clinical trials open to participants from both the Department of Medical Oncology and the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology.”

  • Dr. Nathalie Gaspar, pediatric oncologist

“There is ongoing collaboration between specialists in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology and the ‘Therapeutic Innovation’ team, as well as with the adult committees of the Department of Medical Oncology and the Department of Therapeutic Innovation and Early-Phase Trials (DITEP). These collaborations facilitate the development of treatment protocols that allow both minors and adults to be included in the same trial from the early stages of a new treatment’s development.”
