How does cancer develop?

The human body is made up of billions of cells, at the core of which genes contain instructions that enable the cells to function and renew themselves. Normally, these cells form, multiply by passing on their genes and genetic information to their daughter cells, and then die. Sometimes, mutations occur in certain genes. These abnormalities can disrupt the cell’s functioning. Most often, they are repaired or lead to the cell’s death, but sometimes these cells survive.

This is when cancer develops: a cell that was initially normal becomes abnormal and begins to proliferate uncontrollably. Depending on its origin, the condition is referred to as leukemia when the cancer affects the bone marrow, or as a solid tumor when it develops in an organ or tissue.

Not all cancers progress in the same way, but thanks to medical advances, every child now has a real chance of recovery.

A Tailored Care Pathway

Because of the unique characteristics of pediatric cancers and the patients’ age, treatment is tailored accordingly. It aims not only to achieve a cure but also to minimize short-, medium-, and long-term side effects as much as possible, while ensuring that children’s quality of life is maintained during treatment and after recovery.

Pediatric Cancer Care at Gustave Roussy

A major and long-standing leader in the fight against childhood and adolescent cancers, Gustave Roussy is France’s first pediatric cancer center. Children with cancer are cared for there by a dedicated department: the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology, led by Dr. Christelle Dufour. Patients treated at the center range in age from 0 to 25 years old.

A Research Program on Brain Tumors

For several years, Dr. Jacques Grill has led the “Genomics and Oncogenesis of Pediatric Brain Tumors” research team, the only one in France entirely dedicated to pediatric gliomas, and more specifically to infiltrating brainstem gliomas (DIPG). The team’s work has led to numerous discoveries that are essential to understanding these tumors and developing new treatments.
