Europe Unit: Bringing Gustave Roussy’s Excellence to the Heart of European Policy
Established in 2024 and reporting to Gustave Roussy’s Executive Management, the Europe Unit supports the Institute’s growing presence within major European strategic and infrastructure initiatives in oncology. Serving as a liaison between the Center, European institutions, and national partners, it coordinates the mobilization of experts, identifies strategic opportunities, and helps strengthen Gustave Roussy’s influence in Europe. Its mission: to ensure that the expertise of Europe’s leading cancer center is heard within the networks shaping the future of oncology.

A Strategic Link Between Gustave Roussy and Europe
The Europe Unit coordinates the deployment and involvement of Gustave Roussy experts in joint European initiatives, expert networks, and strategic infrastructure dedicated to oncology. It serves as a central interface between the center, European institutions, and national partners to ensure Gustave Roussy’s coherent, structured, and visible participation in major European initiatives.
Its mission includes monitoring European policies and priorities in health and oncology, identifying opportunities for the institute’s involvement, and coordinating Gustave Roussy’s positioning within European programs, networks, and working groups.
The Europe Unit also supports the Institute’s experts in their contributions to strategic European initiatives. It identifies the most relevant specialists, facilitates their participation, and ensures a consistent representation of Gustave Roussy in various forums. This approach helps showcase the center’s expertise while strengthening its influence in shaping European policies regarding cancer prevention, healthcare organization, and cancer care.
Building a More Coordinated European Cancer Care System
Gustave Roussy’s European engagement falls under two main frameworks for action: Joint Actions and European reference and expertise networks.
Joint Actions are collaborative initiatives involving several Member States focused on priorities defined by the European Union. They aim to harmonize approaches, reduce disparities between countries, pool expertise, strengthen the capacities of healthcare stakeholders, and promote the development of common standards at the European level. These projects also help ensure the sustainability of organizations, tools, and practices beyond their funding period.
At the same time, European networks serve as infrastructures for sustainable cooperation among specialized centers. They promote the sharing of expertise, the harmonization of practices, the development of common tools, and cross-border cooperation for the benefit of patients.
By facilitating the involvement of Gustave Roussy experts in these initiatives, the Europe Unit helps strengthen the center’s European collaborations and increase its visibility among key European stakeholders in healthcare and cancer research.
Five Flagship European Initiatives
This joint European initiative aims to improve access to personalized cancer care in Europe, from prevention through patient follow-up. The project brings together 29 countries and more than 140 partners around three key areas: personalized prevention and early detection, personalized medicine and follow-up, and tertiary prevention. It will run from November 2025 to October 2029.
This initiative aims to develop a European network of Comprehensive Cancer Centers to enhance quality, equity, and collaboration in cancer care. The project currently brings together 234 partners from 31 countries and will run from 2024 to 2028.
This joint European initiative aims to strengthen strategies for the prevention of cancer and other noncommunicable diseases. In particular, it addresses risk factors and health determinants. The project brings together more than 100 partners from 25 countries for the period 2024–2028.
EUCanScreen aims to support the sustainable and high-quality implementation of screening programs for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers, as well as the rollout of new screening programs (lung, prostate, and stomach). It helps harmonize practices and strengthen equitable access to screening across Europe. This project brings together 97 institutions from 29 countries to improve cancer screening programs over the 2024–2028 period.
