In France, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women are or will be affected by cancer during their lifetime, and nearly 385,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year.
With nearly 150,000 deaths per year, cancer is the leading cause of death from disease.
Gustave Roussy aims to lead the three-pronged revolution in cancer: scientific, human, and technological. To achieve this, the Gustave Roussy Foundation is partnering with leading figures in civil society to cure more people more effectively before the end of the century.
Raise 50 million euros
As an integrated center for research, care, and education, Gustave Roussy ranks among the world’s top ten leaders in the fight against cancer. It treats patients with all types of cancer, at every stage of life, and specializes in the treatment of rare and complex tumors.
To accelerate this research, the Gustave Roussy Foundation launched a major fundraising campaign in 2017 to match this ambition: “Curing Cancer in the 21st Century.”
The goal: to raise 50 million euros by 2020 to fund various areas of research and care. We have almost reached this goal and still need your support to move toward a cure for cancer.

Supporting Innovation
Supporting innovation is one of the three priority initiatives of the “Curing Cancer in the 21st Century” campaign.
SUPPORTING INNOVATION: 20 million euros
Supporting innovation to turn hope into progress and improve patients’ life expectancy. Two groundbreaking areas of research, identified by Gustave Roussy as crucial and complementary to finding a cure for cancer: immunotherapy and personalized medicine.
Immunotherapy: Revolutionary Prospects (€10 million)
Immunotherapy is a therapeutic approach that involves unlocking and reactivating patients’ immune systems so that they can attack cancer cells wherever they are located in the body.
As a pioneer and leader in this therapeutic approach, Gustave Roussy is conducting the largest number of immunotherapy clinical trials in Europe.
Personalized Medicine: Building on the Advances Enabled by “Révolution Cancer” (€10 million)
Thanks to its first fundraising campaign, Gustave Roussy was a pioneer in recognizing the full potential of personalized medicine, which makes it possible to identify molecular alterations present in diseased cells. Today, at Gustave Roussy, we can select treatments that directly target these abnormalities. These are known as targeted therapies, or “how to give the right drug to the right patient at the right time.”
These two approaches are revolutionizing systemic cancer treatments by offering new alternatives to conventional therapies. Gustave Roussy’s objectives for each of these approaches are twofold: to deepen our understanding and to improve efficacy.
Ensuring Excellence
Ensuring excellence is one of the three priority initiatives of the “Curing Cancer in the 21st Century” campaign.
ENSURING EXCELLENCE: 25 million euros
Investing in excellence by providing top researchers with a state-of-the-art technological environment that will enable the development of the best treatment protocols—to save lives and fight disease—and accelerate the pace of their discoveries.
A Supportive Environment (€17.5 million)
- Create Europe’s first major cancer research facility, PRECAN: 5,000 m² entirely dedicated to preclinical trials on a national scale.
- Four technology platforms to be maintained at the cutting edge with the best experts.
- Foster the digital revolution in Big Data: leverage the invaluable resources of data generated by research efforts to drive transformative education.
Synergy of expertise (€7.5 million)
- Invest in talent and promote the transfer of expertise to ensure medical excellence in the service of patients.
- Recruit 5 physician-researchers.
- Strengthen our research capacity with two new research teams.
- Establish a chair of excellence by bringing in one internationally renowned researcher and their team.
- Facilitate our international collaboration within the framework of the Cancer Core Europe Consortium.
Taking Care
Caring for patients is one of the three priority initiatives of the “Curing Cancer in the 21st Century” campaign.
CARE 5 million euros
Renovation of waiting areas (€0.6 million)
Redesigning waiting areas to provide an optimal experience for patients and their companions. A new architectural design—featuring, for example, health pathways—is an integral part of Gustave Roussy’s initiative, which places the patient and their loved ones at the center of its care throughout the critical and often difficult stages of their journey.
Nutrition & Cancer Program (€0.4 million)
Changes in eating behavior are extremely varied and numerous during cancer treatments. Gaining a better understanding of and assessing patients’ dietary habits—both before the disease and as they evolve during treatment—helps optimize treatment outcomes. This project involves developing a tool—similar to an online portal—to conduct longitudinal assessments of changes in dietary and nutrition-related behaviors in cancer patients starting from the time of diagnosis.
