Imaging and Cytometry Platform
The PFIC sits at the interface between basic, translational and clinical research. It operates both as a department offering services and as a research and development unit.
From sample preparation to data processing, the PFIC strives to provide researchers with the latest innovations in photon imaging (Confocal/multiphoton, molecular and cellular imaging, tissue imaging and small animal imaging) and cytometry (Flow and Mass cytometry, cell sorting, cloning). It makes its expertise available to Gustave Roussy research teams, academic teams from outside, and to industry.
The platform is part of the French network FLI (France live imaging), of the GDR Imabio-CNRS and RTmFm networks, of the national Mass Cytometry network and of the cell imaging network of Paris Saclay University.
Governance and management
The Gustave Roussy’ scientific committee is responsible for the PFIC governance and defines its strategy.
A steering committee involving 10 researchers/users and PFIC engineers meets once or twice per year to determine the major lines of development of the department in terms of operation and new instrumentation.
R&D work in imaging is carried out in team 3 «Multimodality imaging in oncology» of UMR 8081-CNRS- IR4M.
Service provided and collaboration
The PFIC provides services in photon imaging, flow and mass cytometry, cell sorting and bioinformatics applied to cytometry data.
The platform members are committed to provide advices for experimental designs, sample preparation, instrument choice, training, data mining and processing, as well as exploring and expanding the use of cutting-edge imaging and cytometry instruments and techniques.
The PFIC has set up numerous academic collaborations and industrial partnerships for the development of tools or processes to improve instruments for in vivo imaging, clinical transfer of photonic imaging or still multiparametric cytometry on rare events. New opportunities are still open in these areas, so do not hesitate to contact the PFIC.
Researchers from outside Gustave Roussy (academic and industry)
Access to instruments for researchers from outside Gustave Roussy, cost estimates for training courses and services are only available after an application form has been submitted to the technical staff in charge of the equipment.
Development work requested by research units outside Gustave Roussy (other than collaboration), require the submission of a project summary by the applicant to the PFIC head. The project will be allowed only after assessment and approval by the PFIC scientific committee.
Research and development
High resolution imaging in vivo and transfer of photon imaging into clinical practice
By ensuring a continuum between basic research and clinical application, the PFIC is specifically committed to and sponsor of several pre-clinical and clinical projects that focus on development and transfer of non-invasive and high resolution photon imaging in patients and small animals.
- High resolution imaging in small animal – development of dorsal skinfold chambers for multimodality imaging
- Non-invasive optical biopsies for high resolution evaluation of cancer using full-field optical coherence tomography (European CAReIOCA – FP7 project)

Training of students and researchers in cytometry and imaging is a major mission of the PFIC. An average of hundred researchers per year is trained on both photon imaging and cytometry techniques. Training involves both the underlying theoretical basis and practical work on instruments.
A total of 402 hours of training in imagery and cytometry was provided in 2018 by the department to on-site Gustave Roussy researchers and to external teams.
