Imaging and Cytometry Platform
The PFIC sits at the interface between basic, translational and clinical research. It functions both as a department offering services and as a research and development unit.
It makes its expertise available to Gustave Roussy research teams, academic teams from outside Gustave Roussy and to industry. It provides special skills in flow cytometry, cell sorting, photon imaging, multiphoton molecular and cellular imaging, tissue imaging and small animal photon imaging.
Governance and management
The Gustave Roussy scientific directorate is responsible for governance of the PFIC and defines its strategy.
A mangement committee consisting of 10 researchers/users and departmental engineers meets once or twice per year to determine the major lines of development of the department in terms of its functioning and apparatus.
R&D work in imaging is carried out in team 3 «Multimodality imaging in oncology» of UMR 8081-CNRS- IR4M
The PFIC provides services in photon imaging and imaging and flow cytometry. It trains users in various biomedical imaging fields and in flow cytometry. The PFIC engineers help users during image acquisition and advise them on the handling and interpretation of the data obtained, as well as the conduct of flow and imaging cytometry experiments. The PFIC works with research teams to develop new methods of sample testing. It also provides essential methodological and technical developments to enable new scientific pathways to be opened up.
Researchers from outside Gustave Roussy, both academic and from industry
Access to apparatus for researchers from outside Gustave Roussy, cost estimates for training courses and prices for services may be obtained by approaching the individuals in technical charge of the equipment.
Development work requested by research units outside Gustave Roussy (other than collaboration), require the submission of a project summary by the applicant to the PFIC head. The project will be allowed to start only after assessment and approval by the PFIC scientific committee.
Research and development
High resolution imaging in vivo and transfer of photon imaging to clinical practice
By ensuring continuity between basic research and clinical application of photon imaging, the PFIC is specifically committed to and sponsor of several pre-clinical and clinical programmes which focus on development and transfer into practice of non-invasive high resolution imaging in patients and small animals.
- High resolution imaging in the small animal – development of dorsal window chambers for multimodality imaging
- Non-invasive optical biopsies for high resolution evaluation of cancer using full-field optical coherence tomography (European CAReIOCA – FP7 project)

Training of students and researchers in the techniques of cytometry and imaging is a major function of the PFIC. In general, it trains, on average, more than a hundred researchers per year taking all the techniques of photon imaging and cytometry together. This training involves both the underlying theoretical basis and practical work on optical imaging and flow cytometry apparatus.
A total of 402 hours of training in imagery and cytometry was provided in 2018 by the department to on-site Gustave Roussy researchers and to external teams, as well as to students obtaining masters qualifications:
