Professor David Planchard
Professor David Planchard is a thoracic oncologist and Head of the Thoracic Pathology Committee at Gustave Roussy. He coordinates the multidisciplinary care of patients with thoracic tumours, including lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma and thymic tumours. This care is delivered through close collaboration among all the specialists within the Thoracic Committee — medical and radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, interventional radiologists, pathologists, biologists and thoracic surgeons — as well as with the Marie-Lannelongue and Saint Joseph Hospital Groups, within the framework of the International Thoracic Cancer Centre (CICT).
He obtained a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from Université Paris-Saclay in 2009 and was awarded an Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) in 2024. He was appointed to an academic position at Université Paris-Saclay in 2023.
Professor David Planchard is recognised for his expertise in biomarkers, targeted therapies and immunotherapy for lung cancer. He has been involved in more than 200 Phase I, II and III clinical trials and is the author of more than 300 publications in leading international scientific journals.
As a principal investigator and coordinator of national and international clinical trials in thoracic tumours, he develops clinical research strategies based on molecular profiling and precision medicine. He contributes to the development of national and international guidelines for the management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer, notably through his work with the French National Cancer Institute (INCa), the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
A regular speaker at major international oncology conferences, including ESMO, ELCC, ASCO and WCLC, he also serves as an expert reviewer for several leading international scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Annals of Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
His translational research is conducted within INSERM U981 at Université Paris-Saclay, where his work focuses in particular on the mechanisms of genetic adaptation to kinase inhibitors in thoracic cancers. Since 2020, he has been recognised each year as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher, a distinction awarded to scientists whose publications rank among the top 1% most highly cited in their field.
Professor David Planchard is a member of the French Thoracic Cancer Intergroup (IFCT), where he serves on the Board of Directors, as well as of ESMO, ASCO and AACR. He also contributes to national expert networks accredited by the French National Cancer Institute (INCa), dedicated to thymic tumours (RYTHMIC), malignant pleural mesothelioma (MESOCLIN) and neuroendocrine tumours (RENATEN).
